Ed Permissions Breakdown

Key takeaway: Ed asks for a number of permissions when learners install it to their device. In this article we look at each permission and why we ask for it.

For the best possible learning experience with Ed, we need to access certain features available on your device. Below is a list of the permissions we ask for, and why we ask for them.

Permissions granted on installing Ed

Device & app history

  • Retrieve running apps
  • Read sensitive log data

The device and app history lets us know what version of Ed you have, and what version of your devices operating system you are running. This helps us get an understanding of our users, and helps us when talking through any technical issue with you (e.g. letting us know if you are on the latest version of Ed).

Other

  • Run at startup
  • View network connections
  • Full network access
  • Receive data from Internet
  • Download files without notification
  • Send download notifications.

These permissions each go towards ensuring that we are able to access and download lessons for you to complete. When Ed runs at startup, it immediately checks for new lessons, or updates to old lessons - meaning that downloads have completed once it’s time for your daily lesson completion, providing a seamless user experience.

The ability to view and access networks, and receive data from the internet lets us download your lessons - and the ability to do this with or without notification means Ed can handle all content management in the background (without bothering you).

Photos/Media/Files

  • Read the contents of your USB storage
  • Modify or delete the contents of your USB storage

Storage

  • Read the contents of your USB storage
  • Modify or delete the contents of your USB storage

We ask for access to your device’s storage so that we have a place to store your downloaded lessons, ready for you to instantly access them in the future, whether you are online or offline.

Other

  • Control vibration

Our ability to control vibration means we can send you notifications when there is a new prize up for grabs, or a fresh lesson to complete.

Other

  • Prevent device from sleeping

Ed prevents your device from going to sleep (i.e. the screen turning off) while you are completing lessons. This means that you won’t be interrupted while watching a video, or reading a long piece of text.

Notifications

  • Allow notifications

Ed asks users to allow notifications when swiping through the initial onboarding screens. Ed uses notifications to automatically remind learners to complete their daily lesson, to let them know what prize is currently available in the Star Bar, and to let them know the outcome of any auctions they've bid on.
